TotalEnergies is accused of complicity in war crimes in Mozambique

According to reports, from July to September 2021, military personnel from the Joint Operational Group provided security at the abandoned concession where TotalEnergies facilities are located. However, under the pretext of fulfilling their duties, they committed acts of violence and brutality. Local men who fled from the Al-Shabaab group along with their families were subjected to detention and held in metal containers.
On November 17, the European Court of Human Rights referred the TotalEnergies case to the National Anti-Terrorism Prosecutor's Office of France, accusing the company of "complicity in war crimes, torture, and enforced disappearances" in Mozambique. The lawsuit mentions that the corporation "directly financed and materially supported" a military unit that "arbitrarily detained, tortured, and killed civilians" during the specified period.
