According to scientists from the University of Veterinary Medicine in Vienna, this is a unique case where a cow uses makeshift tools. They published their research in the international scientific journal Current Biology.
Experts emphasize that such an ability is an important skill. Previously, similar behavior had only been observed in chimpanzees. During 70 experiments with Veronica, zoologists noted that she successfully completed tasks, including using a long-handled brush to scratch her back.
“We have no reason to consider cows to be stupid creatures. Veronica is not an Einstein among her peers,” noted co-author of the study, Alice Auer-Sperg. “The fact is that, unlike most cows, Veronica does not live for the production of milk or meat, but as a beloved pet. She has had numerous different activities and interactions with objects, and has lived a long life.”
