OpenAI has announced the implementation of a new feature in ChatGPT that will determine the age of users in order to identify minors. This was reported in the company's press release.
“Our new age prediction feature in the consumer plans of ChatGPT will allow us to determine whether a user is under 18 years old and provide them with a safe and appropriate experience,” the statement notes.
To assess age, ChatGPT uses a model that analyzes behavioral signals as well as parameters such as account age, the time of day when users most frequently interact with the chatbot, and the age specified by the user.
Additionally, OpenAI allows users who have been mistakenly classified as minors to verify their age through a photo using the Persona identity verification service and regain full access to ChatGPT.
In September of this year, Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, announced the company's plans to enhance user privacy and improve safety for minors when using ChatGPT. One of the proposed solutions was the implementation of the age determination feature.
ChatGPT became popular after its launch in late November 2022, gathering over a million users in just a few days. Among the co-founders of OpenAI, established in 2015, was American billionaire Elon Musk, who later severed ties with the project.
