"We Could Be Wrong": Sam Altman Acknowledged That AI is Developing Dangerously Fast
Sam Altman, the head of OpenAI, expressed serious concern about the rapid development of artificial intelligence. He emphasized that in a relatively short time, this technology has become a major factor in changes in the economy and everyday life, and its implementation is occurring at a pace that has no historical precedent. Altman highlighted the importance of the OpenAI team being aware of potential errors in risk assessments and approaches to AI integration.
Altman reminded that generative AI began to actively develop just three years ago. During this time, technologies have evolved from simple systems that create text and images on demand to complex platforms that support medical professionals, scientists, educators, and engineers. He noted that it is the speed and scale of these changes that place society in challenging conditions, as government and business structures are unable to establish stable rules and habits for working with the new technology.
The head of OpenAI pointed out the dual potential of ChatGPT. On one hand, he views it as a tool capable of accelerating the development of medical drugs, improving the learning process, and facilitating access to knowledge. On the other hand, Altman identified the risks associated with using AI to create malicious code, manipulate public opinion, and develop dangerous solutions that existing institutions may not be able to handle.
He also emphasized the hidden costs of rapid growth: increased energy consumption of data centers, the need for powerful cooling, and potential consequences for climate and ecology. In this rapidly changing world, experts increasingly talk about users' dependence on chatbots and the decline of independent thinking, as well as link excessive use of AI to deteriorating mental health. Altman stresses that artificial intelligence must be presented to the world responsibly, so that people have time to understand the changes and influence the rules for using new technologies, reports 3dnews.ru.
