What is meant by vibe coding?
The idea of vibe coding belongs to Slovak-Canadian scientist Andrej Karpathy, who is a co-founder of OpenAI and previously served as the director of artificial intelligence at Tesla. Earlier this year, he shared on social media that AI allows developers to "fully focus on vibes" and "forget about the existence of code." According to him, he often does not fix errors in the code: when an error occurs, he simply hands it over to AI, which usually finds a solution on its own. If that doesn’t work, he may make random changes until the problem disappears.“I’m not doing real coding; I just see something, talk about it, run it, copy and paste, and in most cases, it works,” he noted.
Vibe coding.
Even those without programming experience can simply describe a task for AI, for example: “create a program to plan my weekly meals.” Although more complex tasks still require certain skills, vibe coding provides a way for non-programmers to develop their digital projects.
While this method has already demonstrated its effectiveness, it is not without drawbacks: there is no guarantee that the generated code will work without errors. Alex Bikroft, managing director of Collins, noted that this term best reflects "how language adapts to technological changes."
Vibe coding has become one of ten words on the shortlist that illustrate the sentiments and current issues of 2025. Although some of the words presented are not new for this year, Collins concluded that it is in 2025 that they gained particular popularity.
