Kalmuart Japarkulov, a 59-year-old veterinarian from the Sokuluk district of the Chui region, has an impressive 40 years of experience in artificial insemination.

This year, he gained new knowledge in Moscow and is now successfully applying the method of laparoscopic insemination on sheep owned by local farmers.

Kalmuart was born in 1966 in the village of Asylbash in the Chui region.

“I live in the village of Sokuluk. In 1988, I graduated from the Agricultural Institute with a degree in veterinary medicine. Over the years of work, I have learned to quickly identify animal diseases by their behavior and appearance. Previously, I worked on inseminating cows and horses. When I come for insemination, I also examine other domestic animals and help the owners with treatment advice,” he shared.

Japarkulov noted that for inseminating sheep, he uses sperm from rams of the Arashan breed, which can cost up to 100 thousand dollars.
“The old methods of insemination did not yield the desired results, so we decided to learn a new approach in Moscow. Upon returning, we tested it on our sheep and achieved 100% success within a month. Since then, we have also started working with animals from other farmers,” he said.

“What I liked most is that the effectiveness of the new method is 95–100%. The sperm is introduced directly into the uterus, unlike the old method, where it was introduced through the vagina. In sheep, the cervix has 7 partitions, which makes it difficult for sperm to pass through and reduces effectiveness. In goats, there can be up to 12 partitions, making artificial insemination even more complicated. In natural mating, a ram releases billions of sperm, but only a few overcome these barriers, making the old method less reliable,” Kalmuart added.

The advantage of the new method is also that farmers do not need to spend large sums on expensive rams. “Instead of 300 thousand soms to buy a ram, one can purchase its sperm and inseminate sheep using the new method. One procedure costs 15 thousand soms, and the price of frozen sperm ranges from 10 to 15 thousand soms. The ejaculate is enough to inseminate up to 100 sheep, which significantly simplifies the task for novice farmers,” he noted.

Kalmuart also reported that currently, there are only three specialists in this field working in the Chui region.

“We trained another veterinarian in the Osh region, and he is now successfully working there,” he added.

The laparoscopic insemination method is not required for cows and horses, as they have a wide uterine canal, allowing for manual sperm insertion. In sheep, this canal is narrow.

“We hope that our method can significantly improve sheep farming in the country and transition to a higher quality livestock. If every household has Arashan breed sheep, the meat will become of higher quality, and everyone will benefit,” he concluded.
