Recently, residents of Almaty have started actively reporting sightings of rats on the streets, in parks, and near garbage containers. Information about this is coming from both local media and the residents themselves through social networks.

Current Situation

Citizens express concern about the large number of rats that roam freely around the city.

Danger of the Situation

According to experts, rats are carriers of various dangerous diseases, such as leptospirosis, salmonellosis, plague, and pseudotuberculosis.

Authorities' Measures to Address the Problem

The city authorities continue to carry out comprehensive measures to control the rodent population. In this fight, special poisonous baits are used, which are claimed to be safe for humans and pets. "The bait has a bitter taste, and other animals usually do not eat more after trying it. Rats, however, pay no attention to this," noted the akimat in response to a request from Tengrinews.

Reasons for Population Increase

According to specialists, the growth of the rodent population is linked to active construction in the metropolis and ground vibrations that force them to leave their usual shelters, as reported by KTK.

However, ecologists argue that the main reason lies in the harsh crackdown on stray animals conducted several years ago.

Experts emphasize: "As a result, the imbalance in the ecosystem has intensified. There are now no natural predators to control the rat population, which breeds in unfavorable sanitary conditions, for example, in Almaty markets and bazaars."

Impact on Us

Currently, the rules for keeping pets in Bishkek are being updated. Some provisions of these documents concern the fight against stray animals, including a strict ban on feeding them. Activists urge to consider both positive and negative experiences when developing new pet ownership rules.
