According to information provided by Kazinform and citing TASS, January 2026 became the month with the highest recorded number of days with magnetic storms since 2017.
The Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the IKI RAS and the ISZF SB RAS reported that the beginning of 2026 may indicate high activity in the geomagnetic sphere, which has not been observed for at least the last 10 years. In particular, January saw 10 days with magnetic storms — the highest figure for the entire 25th solar activity cycle and the maximum value since September 2017.
The main sources of these magnetic storms were coronal holes.
