In January, the main sources of magnetic storms were coronal holes on the Sun. However, the strongest storm of the month, which lasted from January 19 to 21, was a direct hit from a plasma cloud ejected by the Sun as a result of an X1.9-class flare recorded on January 18.
With the beginning of February, there has been a temporary decrease in geomagnetic activity: only one magnetic storm was recorded in the first week of the month. Despite this, a recent significant surge in solar activity, one of the most powerful in the last hundred years, did not have a noticeable impact on Earth.
The reasons for this behavior of solar activity are not yet clear; however, the situation may change soon as new coronal holes approach Earth.
