According to astronomers, the cause of the storms at levels G2 and G3 was plasma ejections directed towards Earth as a result of solar activities. These ejections have "noticeably larger angles of spread and speeds than previously assumed," as stated in the institute's report.
Scientists also noted that on November 7, the storm will enter the "main phase," when the main volumes of ejected plasma will reach Earth, causing even more intense geomagnetic processes.
Additionally, the occurrence of magnetic storms was influenced by a fast solar wind from a coronal hole. Earth entered its flow on the evening of November 5. This was mentioned in the Telegram channel by leading specialist of the Phobos weather center, Mikhail Leus.
The combination of these factors led to the onset of a magnetic storm after midnight, which peaked at an average level of G2. Currently, the storm has somewhat weakened to a minimum level of G1; however, international meteorological centers warn that this is just the beginning of a long period of instability.
Geomagnetic disturbances and periodic storms at levels G1 and G2 are expected throughout the day. The peak of activity is predicted for Friday, November 7, when the bulk of solar ejections will reach near-Earth space. On this day, strong magnetic storms at level G3 and even very strong ones at G4 may occur.
The intensity of disturbances is expected to begin decreasing only on the night of November 8. It is forecasted that this day will pass with noticeable fluctuations in the magnetosphere, but without exceeding the threshold of a magnetic storm. A complete calm and return of the geomagnetic field to the "green" zone is expected only the next day.
Leus also emphasized that magnetic storms continue to gain strength. "The level of disturbances in the geomagnetic field is increasing, and currently, the K-index, reflecting the level of these disturbances, has reached 6.67, which is close to a strong magnetic storm at level G3," he added.
