Folk Legends: The Lake in the Slope Zone of Issyk-Kul, Where the Cries of a Woman and the Cry of a Child Can Be Heard
Information about this lake can be found in the district encyclopedia.
The lake, known as “Өкүргөн-Көл” (translated as “Weeping”), is located in the mountain range of the inner Tenir-Tuu, on the northern slopes of Jeti-Bel, on the right side of the Taragay River, at an altitude of 3628 meters above sea level.
According to one legend, in 1916 during the uprising, many families lost their lives. In one such family, only a young woman with a small child remained. Taking the infant, she set off on a camel towards China. The journey lasted 2-3 days, during which she encountered numerous corpses. Suddenly, she heard the howling of wolves approaching from all sides. Frightened, the woman reached the mountain of Jeti-Bel and saw the lake. As it began to get dark, she decided to cross the frozen lake. However, upon reaching the middle, the ice cracked, and they fell into the water. At that moment, the screams of the woman and the camel, as well as the cries of the child, were heard. Thus, the mother and her child perished.
Local residents claim that since then, on days of strong storms and winds, these cries and the child's wailing can still be heard. Hence the name of the lake “Өкүргөн-Көл.” In winter, the surface of the water is covered with ice, while in summer, waves appear on the lake.
