Kulung - "foal"
The Kulung and Kulung Minor lakes are a group of lakes, enchanting with their beauty and located in the Osh region of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, in the western part of the Fergana Range, within the territory of the Kulunatin State Nature Reserve, established in 2004 with a total area of 24 thousand hectares, aimed at preserving the biodiversity of juniper-coniferous forests, at an altitude of 2856 m.
The distance between the lakes, connected by the waters of the river of the same name, is about 2.5 km. It is worth noting that both lakes belong to the dam type. The water seeping through the dam from Kulung Lake forms Kulung Minor Lake.
The landscape of the reserve is mountainous and quite diverse. There are about 600 species of useful wild flora and more than 100 different species of animals and birds. On the southwest slope, forest landscapes represented by nut-fruit, dark-coniferous, and juniper forests alternate with mountain-meadow subalpine and alpine landscapes.
Despite the fact that Kulung Lake is the largest lake in the area (3.25 sq.km) with a depth of 91 m, its name translates from Kyrgyz as "foal".
