Caribbean and African countries demand reparations from Britain for slavery
A delegation representing the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) reparations commission plans to negotiate with representatives of the British government. The main topics of discussion will focus on addressing the consequences of slavery and colonialism, as well as their long-term effects.
Fifteen countries within CARICOM intend to propose a plan that includes "official apologies, educational initiatives, debt forgiveness, and monetary compensation."
The African Union is also developing a similar plan for its countries, which are demanding compensation for the slave trade conducted by Europeans from the 15th to the 19th centuries. It is estimated that more than 12.5 million people fell victim to this horrific phenomenon.
However, there is a growing negative reaction to such demands worldwide. Many European leaders express disagreement with discussing the issue of reparations, arguing that modern states should not be held accountable for the mistakes of the past.
According to a 2025 survey conducted for The Repair Campaign, 85 percent of respondents in the UK were unaware that the country forcibly relocated over 3 million Africans to the Caribbean islands.
