During the restoration of a church located in Maastricht, archaeologists stumbled upon a skeleton that was buried beneath the altar. This circumstance indicates the high social status of this individual. The grave also contained a fragment of a musket ball and a French coin, as reported by the Dutch publication NOS.

The remains have been sent for DNA analysis, and researchers suggest that they may belong to Charles de Batz de Castelmore d'Armanac — the captain of the musketeers at the court of French King Louis XIV and the prototype of the hero from Alexandre Dumas' novel "The Three Musketeers." Historical records indicate that d'Armanac died in 1673 during the siege of Maastricht, likely receiving a fatal wound to the throat or chest. The location of his burial had remained unknown until now.

Archaeologist Wim Dijkman, who participated in the excavations, expressed caution in his conclusions: "Until the analysis results are obtained, I cannot confidently assert that it is indeed him. However, at this moment, there is no data that contradicts this assumption," he noted in an interview with NOS.
