Batken is a city in Kyrgyzstan, the administrative center of Batken Region and District.
The population is 12,134 people (according to the 2009 census).
It is located in the southwest of Kyrgyzstan, approximately 240 km west of Osh.
The total area of the city is 5,180 hectares. The city’s own territory (excluding private plots) is 1,143 hectares. Agricultural land in the city amounts to 4,037 hectares, including 1,106 hectares of land for peasant farms, of which 918 hectares are irrigated; land for FPS (Farm Production Systems) is 393 hectares, including 316 hectares irrigated; land for subsidiary farms is 27 hectares (irrigated); private plots of city residents total 111 hectares (irrigated) and 2,400 hectares of pastures.
The territory under the city administration is 205 km², of which 51.8 km² is within the city limits, while the remaining 153 km² consists of rural areas with 3 suburban villages (the largest of which is the village of Kyzyl-Zhol with a population of 3,207), where a total of 5,760 people live[1]. Thus, the total population within the territory governed by the city administration is 17,894 people.
The village of Batken was established in April 1934 as the district center of the same-name Batken District. In 1999, to improve the management efficiency of these lands after a series of militant attacks, Batken Region was formed from 3 western districts of Osh Region, with Batken as its administrative center. As a result, the village of Batken was granted city status in 2000, with a population of 10,987 people at that time. In 2001, 3 suburban villages were subordinated to the city.
According to the administrative-territorial structure, the city is divided into 6 neighborhoods: Airport, Bazar-Bashi, Bulak-Bashi, Kelechek, Kyzyl-Don, and Kyzyl-Zhol.
