She suffers from polyarthritis and is a disabled person of group II, but this does not prevent her from earning a living by creating and selling knitted items.
“I am learning to read the Quran and spend my free time doing handicrafts. I give the items I knit to those who teach me. Due to my illness, I cannot walk for long and need support to go outside. I have been suffering from this illness for many years,” says Kalikova.
She has been engaged in handicrafts for almost 48 years.
“I knit bags for the Quran, regular bags, jumpers, vests, phone cases, socks, and headwear. Especially during the difficult times of 1994-1995, I knitted clothes for the children of my relatives,” she recalls.
“Back then, we spun threads from the wool of Angora goats, and now my younger sister, who works in Russia, sends me quality soft yarn, which I use for knitting. I also create small items like teapot coasters and phone cases,” Kalikova added.
The prices for her products are affordable for many. For example, children's jumpers cost from 500 soms, and hats — up to 300 soms. Knitted clothing for adults averages around 2,000 soms, teapot coasters are sold for 100 soms, and phone cases for 500 soms,” she summarized.
