Tehran may run out of water: evacuation plan is being prepared

Tehran is facing a critical situation with water supply, and local authorities are considering the possibility of evacuating the population, reports Kazinform citing BILD.

The drought in the region has led to a significant shortage of water resources, prompting Iran's president, Masoud Pezeshkian, to mention the potential introduction of rationing and even the evacuation of the capital in the absence of rain.

The main source of drinking water for the city is the Amir-Kabir reservoir; however, according to Behzad Parsa, head of Tehran's water supply management, there are only 14 million cubic meters of water left in it, which is about 8% of its total capacity.

At this level of reserves, the capital will be able to meet its water needs for only two weeks.

Tehran has a population of over 10 million people, who consume approximately three million cubic meters of water daily. In some areas of the city, temporary water supply outages are already being observed, and similar problems occurred during the summer period.

According to an analytical report from the Center for Middle East Studies and Global Order (CMEG), the water crisis affects not only reservoirs but also degrading wetlands and depleted groundwater sources.

Experts point to the lack of readiness among authorities to invest in infrastructure, which could exacerbate the current situation.

The report also notes that environmental issues in the country have often led to mass protests, and the current water shortage could have serious political consequences.
