An expert pointed out the problem of overpopulation in the capital
In the new master plan presented by the authorities of Bishkek, the introduction of limits on drinking water consumption for citizens is being considered. Ernest Karybekov, former chairman of the Institute for the Study of Water Problems and Hydropower Resources of Central Asia, expressed doubts about the feasibility of this decision, as the authorities continue to build and densify the city.
“They always talk about the overloading of Bishkek. I suggested moving the capital to Kochkorka to reduce the burden on the city. However, permits for the construction of high-rise buildings are still being issued, and at the same time, restrictions on water supply are being discussed. We really do lack water — wells have to be drilled deeper than before. I have a question: why are the Ministry of Economy, the city administration, and the Cabinet of Ministers not analyzing the consequences of their decisions? If the population of Bishkek grows to 2 million, serious problems with infrastructure and water supply will arise,” he noted in a conversation with Vesti.kg.
Karybekov also added that experts warn of a possible decrease in precipitation in the region in the coming years.
“This means that the consumption of groundwater will increase. The construction sector is an important part of our economy. But if these factors are not taken into account, there should be other bodies, such as the Department of Water Management and various ministries, that could provide recommendations. The state should care about the well-being of its citizens. The introduction of limits is clearly a sign of other problems. Bishkek is already struggling with its current population. Cars create numerous difficulties. People are trying to move to the southern part of the city, further from the center, which significantly increases prices in the suburbs. Children need access to schools, and everyone requires medical services. So what is the goal? To earn more by selling more real estate in the capital, or to care for the citizens? What are the priorities of the city administration and the government right now?” the expert questions.
According to specialists mentioned in the new master plan, the population of Bishkek could grow to 2 million residents over the next 25 years.
