Federica Mogherini, who previously held the position of head of European diplomacy and rector of the College of Europe, was detained in Belgium on December 2 in connection with allegations of fraud and corruption in procurement, as well as a conflict of interest. According to the Italian agency AGI, she was released during the night.

In addition to Mogherini, the former Secretary-General of the European External Action Service, Stefano Sannino, and a third participant, Cesare Zegretti, were also detained in the case. All three received formal charges after questioning, but they were released as they "do not pose a threat to justice," reports the local newspaper La Repubblica.

During the investigation, the police conducted searches at the office of the European External Action Service and other institutions suspected of possible fraud related to the tender for training EU diplomats.

Global media reacted to the events with great caution, emphasizing their significance. Politico.eu states that "this investigation could lead to a serious crisis in the EU."

For its part, The Guardian characterized the situation as unprecedented.
