According to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), 2025 could become the second or third warmest year on record in the history of meteorological observations. Throughout this year, the Earth continues to set temperature records.

As noted by the UN News Service, the last 11 years, starting from 2015, have already been recognized as the hottest in the last 176 years.

“From January to August 2025, the average surface temperature of the Earth was 1.42 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. Although this figure is somewhat lower than in 2024—when the influence of El Niño was observed—the heat still persists. Almost every month from June 2023 to August 2025 set temperature records, except for February,” the report states.

Scientists attribute the current changes not only to natural climate cycles but also to the increase in anthropogenic factors, such as the rise in aerosol production, which contributes to global warming.

This year, the world faced catastrophic flooding in Asia and Africa, wildfires in Europe and North America, as well as deadly tropical cyclones. These events significantly impacted the economy, food security, and led to mass population displacements.

In addition, the oceans continue to absorb excess heat: over 90 percent of the extra energy caused by greenhouse gases goes into the waters of the oceans. This leads to the destruction of ecosystems, intensified storms, and accelerated glacier melting.

Sea levels are rising at an increasing rate: while in the 1990s, it increased by 2.1 millimeters per year, it has now reached 4.1 millimeters. A record was set in 2024, which temporarily decreased this year due to natural factors.

Moreover, the area of Arctic sea ice after this winter reached its lowest level since satellite observations began. In Antarctica, the situation is also concerning: in 2025, the third-largest ice loss in recorded history was observed. Global glaciers have been losing mass for the third consecutive year.
