As part of a joint project with the Central State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents (CSAFPSD KR), which is part of the Archive Service of the KR, AKIpress presents archival photographs titled "It Was Recently, It Was Long Ago."

This publication is dedicated to the everyday life of Kyrgyz people.

The presented photograph depicts the courtyard of a Kyrgyz man in the Chimkent district, located near the Russian settlement of Voznesensky. The photo shows people engaged in the winnowing of wheat, next to whom is a Russian worker. The snapshot was taken in September 1910, which means it was captured 115 years ago.

Information: In 1910, the Chimkent district was part of the Syrdarya region of the Russian Empire, with its administrative center in the city of Chimkent. The district was established on October 21, 1868, after the region was conquered by the Russian Empire.

At that time, the population of Chimkent was 16,000 people. The district included 28 volosts, which comprised 540 rural communities.

The population of the district was multinational, consisting of Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, Uzbeks, and Russian settlers.

Russian peasants who settled in this region after 1864 mastered the irrigation of lands, which made the Chimkent district an important grain-producing area, supplying wheat, millet, and barley even to cities like Tashkent and Fergana.

The photograph is provided by the Central State Archive of Film, Photo, and Sound Documents of the KR.
