The city of Balykchy, once an important transit point on the Great Silk Road, is now a key economic center of the Issyk-Kul region.

Geographically, Balykchy serves as the gateway to Lake Issyk-Kul, which is recognized as a tourist zone of international significance. The city is located on the northwest shore of this picturesque lake.

The historical roots of Balykchy trace back to a small fishing village called Bachino, established as a post between Pishpek and Karakol. In 1909, it was renamed the settlement of Rybachye.

In the mid-1880s, retired Russian army officer Mikhail Bachin founded a farmstead where he began developing the fishing industry and organized a fishing cooperative. Soon, this small post grew into a large fishing settlement known by the name of its founder. In addition to fishing, the locals were also engaged in timber transportation. By 1907, the settlement had 100 families of fishermen, and in 1909 it became part of the Przhevalsky district of the Semirechye region of the Turkestan General Governorship.
The status of a city was granted to the settlement in 1954. During the Soviet period, it became a significant transport and industrial hub, specializing in the processing of wool and agricultural products, as well as having shipping and railway terminals. However, after the collapse of the Soviet Union, Balykchy lost a significant part of its economic base due to the closure of most industrial facilities.

Currently, Balykchy is the terminal station of the Lugovoe-Bishkek-Balykchy railway line, connecting the city to the railway network of the CIS countries. This strategic transport position significantly influences the economic life of the city and its appearance.
