This bluefin tuna weighed 243 kilograms and was caught in the waters off the northern Aomori prefecture, with a price tag of 510 million yen ($3.2 million). This achievement broke the previous record set in January 1999, when a tuna was sold for 333.6 million yen ($2.9 million).

Local restaurateurs explain such high spending at the auction as a pursuit of prestige and superstitions that claim acquiring the main lot at the first auction of the year will bring good luck in business.
