At the last auction in the USA, the final minted penny coins were sold for an amount close to $17 million. The auction house Stack’s Bowers Galleries offered 232 sets for sale, each consisting of three coins, and the final price amounted to $16.7 million. These sets symbolize the end of a 232-year era of penny production.

Each set includes a 2025 penny minted at the Philadelphia mint, a 2025-D penny from Denver, and the first gold penny made of 24-karat gold with a purity of 99.99 percent. All coins have a small Omega mark.

Kris McNally, director of the U.S. Mint, noted: “This 1-cent coin has gone through 232 years of our country’s history. We are pleased to provide people the opportunity to capture this moment by acquiring one of the unique sets.”

This February, U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the cessation of minting 1-cent coins, citing the high costs of their production. It cost the budget 4 cents to produce one such coin. This measure is expected to save $56 million a year. The last penny was minted in November 2025.
