In accordance with Article 15 of the Law "On the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic" and the resolution of the Board of the National Bank of the Kyrgyz Republic "On the issuance of coins with a denomination of 1, 10, 50 tyiyn and 1, 3, 5 soms" No. 44/2 dated October 11, 2007, starting from January 1, 2008, a collection coin with a denomination of 1 tyiyn and circulating coins with denominations of 10, 50 tyiyn and 1, 3, 5 soms are introduced into circulation throughout the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The circulating coin with a denomination of 5 soms is made by coating a steel core with nickel.
On the obverse side of the coin, an image of a traditional Kyrgyz leather vessel called kёkёr for the national drink kumys is used. Each kёkёr features the symbol of a tumar, represented in the form of a triangle, which has been used in various Kyrgyz ornaments.
On the reverse side of the coin, the coat of arms of the Kyrgyz Republic and the year of coinage are placed.
The circulating coin with a denomination of 5 soms has the status of an official means of payment within the territory of the Kyrgyz Republic and is subject to mandatory acceptance as a means of payment starting from January 1, 2008.
