At the Osenat auction held in Versailles, near Paris, a painting by the Flemish master Peter Paul Rubens titled "Christ on the Cross" was successfully sold. This work had been considered lost for over 400 years and was purchased for the sum of 2.9 million euros, as reported by RIA Novosti, citing the newspaper Parisien.
The publication notes that on Sunday, "Christ on the Cross" was sold in a packed hall of the Osenat auction house for 2,940,798 euros, including commission fees.
The lot was initially estimated at 1-2 million euros, with a starting price of 500,000 euros, the newspaper adds.
In September, the France Press agency reported that Jean-Pierre Osenat, an appraiser and head of the Osenat auction house, discovered the painting "Christ on the Cross" in one of the Parisian mansions, where it had been since 1613.
Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640) is a renowned Dutch (Flemish) painter, considered one of the founders of Baroque painting. His artistic legacy includes around 3,000 works.
