At Sotheby's auction in New York, Frida Kahlo's self-portrait titled "The Dream (The Bed)" was sold for an impressive $54.6 million. This amount not only set a record for female artists but also for Latin American art as a whole, reports The Guardian.
The bidding for the artwork lasted only four minutes, and the name of the new owner remains a secret for now. The painting, created in 1940, depicts a sleeping Frida Kahlo on a bed, above which a skeleton wrapped in dynamite is cheerfully smiling. Previously, the work was part of a private collection, while Kahlo's works displayed in museums and private collections in Mexico are protected as cultural monuments and are not for sale.
