The incident occurred on October 28 on Interstate I-59, where a truck transporting 21 rhesus macaques from Tulane University's National Biomedical Research Center to a testing facility in Florida overturned. This was reported by The Guardian.

Jasper County Sheriff Randy Johnson stated that the truck driver alerted emergency services about a potential threat related to the escaped animals. Later, representatives from Tulane University confirmed that the monkeys were not infected and that they were cooperating with local authorities.

On the same day, police shot all the escaped primates except for one.

On November 2, it became known that the last monkey was shot by local resident Jessica Bond Ferguson. She reported that her 16-year-old son spotted the animal in their yard. The woman noted that residents had previously been warned about the potential danger of infection from the primates.

“I acted as any mother would, protecting my children,” Ferguson emphasized.

The Jasper County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the monkey was shot on private property, and its carcass was handed over to specialists from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks.

Tulane University once again denied rumors about the possible infection of the monkeys, stating that “the monkeys were not exposed to infectious diseases.”

Earlier, authorities reported the death of all primates except for one; however, they later clarified that three more monkeys were still being searched for.
