The Ombudsman Institute is concerned: among children in the republic, oncology is on the rise

The number of cases of refusal of medical procedures by parents has also increased.

In Kyrgyzstan, there is a growing trend of oncological diseases among children. This became known during a meeting of representatives of the Ombudsman Institute with doctors from the pediatric oncology department of the National Center for Maternal and Child Health Protection.

As of the end of 2025, about 60 young patients were in the hospital. Doctors noted that the statistics on new cases are increasing every year. For example, in 2014, 70 new cases were registered, while as of 2023, this figure exceeds 200.

“The most common diagnoses are acute lymphoblastic leukemia, brain tumors, neuroblastomas, and nephroblastomas. The increase in the number of diseases is associated not only with a real rise in morbidity but also with advances in the field of diagnostics,” the specialists explained.

In addition, doctors expressed concern about the growing number of refusals by parents to treat their children.

“Many do not trust medical institutions and face financial difficulties. Often, for religious reasons, they turn to mullahs and folk healers. We had a case where a child with leukemia after remission was taken by parents and switched to alternative treatment methods. A year later, the disease re-emerged, and the child passed away,” the specialists shared details with human rights defenders.
