Winter Olympic Games will start in Italy on February 6.
During the UN General Assembly meeting, Chairperson Annalena Baerbock urged all conflicting parties to a "mutual ceasefire" during the sporting events, referencing the ancient principle of the Olympic truce.
Baerbock noted: "The Olympic truce shows that even in times of disagreement, humanity can find common ground through sport. I urge all parties involved in current armed conflicts to show determination and achieve a genuine mutual ceasefire during the Olympic truce."
She also reminded of the ancient Greek practice of ekecheiria, which translates to "Olympic truce," emphasizing it as a "sacred principle of the games."
The UN News Service recalled the General Assembly resolution calling on countries to observe a truce from the seventh day before the start of the Winter Olympic Games until the seventh day after the conclusion of the Winter Paralympic Games.
Baerbock emphasized that through friendly competition, disagreements can be overcome.
She also noted that the upcoming games will be the most gender-balanced in Olympic history.
Kyrgyzstan will be represented by two athletes at this Olympics:
- Timur Shakirov — alpine skiing (coach Igor Borisov);
- Artur Saparbekov — cross-country skiing (coach Alexander Levdansky).
They will compete in alpine skiing and cross-country skiing events.
