During the meeting of the Jogorku Kenesh, Deputy Gulnara Akimbayeva raised the issue of the need to support the citizens of Kyrgyzstan who participated in the cleanup of the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant disaster in 1986.

She emphasized that more than 4,000 Kyrgyz citizens were sent to the site of the disaster.

“On April 26 of this year, it will be 40 years since this tragedy. More than 4,000 of our citizens participated in the aftermath of the catastrophe. Due to radiation exposure, their health has suffered. Currently, about 800 people are still alive, many of whom have disabilities,” the deputy stated.

Akimbayeva also noted that government institutions should organize commemorative events in April and provide social support to the Chernobyl survivors and their families.

In addition, she called for attention to be paid to assistance for Kyrgyz citizens who participated in military actions in Afghanistan.
