Sergey Vakunov, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Russia in Bishkek, confirmed that the expansion of the Kant airbase in Kyrgyzstan is not necessary. He noted that the existing parameters of the base fully meet the security requirements within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO).

“Experts have concluded that the current operating conditions of the airbase are sufficient to protect against threats coming from the southern direction,” said Vakunov.

According to him, the Russian military stationed in Kyrgyzstan effectively carry out their tasks, including assisting local law enforcement agencies in combating terrorism, extremism, drug trafficking, and organized crime. They also participate in joint exercises with other CSTO member states. For example, last September, they actively participated in the command-staff exercises "Rubezh-2025," which took place in the Issyk-Kul region.

Sergey Vakunov added that Russia will continue to provide the airbase with modern weapons, equipment, and technology.

He also reminded that the combined Russian airbase in Kant and Karakol was established over 20 years ago in response to a request from the country's leadership during a difficult period when international terrorists from Afghanistan were attacking Kyrgyzstan. Since then, the base has played an important role in ensuring the security of the republic and supporting the CSTO Rapid Reaction Forces in the region.
