During intergovernmental negotiations in Minsk, diplomats from the CIS member states called for the formation of a unified position aimed at countering the politicization of the work of UN human rights bodies. They emphasized the need for constructive and mutually respectful cooperation in the field of human rights.
Delegations from Azerbaijan, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and representatives of the CIS Executive Committee participated in the discussions.
“The participants of the meeting noted that it is necessary to jointly resist attempts to reform the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) so that it does not turn into an independent organization without control from states. It was also emphasized that one of the reasons for the current financial problems of the Human Rights Council is the inappropriate filling of its agenda,” the official statement said.
In addition, the diplomats agreed on the need for joint efforts against attempts to distort the history of World War II and expressed support for each other’s candidates in elections to human rights and other specialized UN bodies.
