At the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, South Korean director Park Chan-wook will become the first-ever jury chair from South Korea. He is known for his work on the cult film "Oldboy."

The festival organizers noted that Park Chan-wook's chairmanship highlights the significance of Korean cinema for the Cannes Film Festival. "Korea is a powerful cinematic country, whose unique works continue to amaze audiences every year. It has proven its ability to create impressive contemporary films that attract millions of viewers to theaters," the official statement reads.

The film "Oldboy" won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in 2004, and Park Chan-wook has also received recognition for his other works, such as "Thirst," "The Handmaiden," and "Decision to Leave."

The 79th Cannes International Film Festival will take place from May 12 to May 23, 2026.
