The point in the trolleybus case: The Supreme Court sided with the Bishkek city hall

The environmental consequences and the arrest of the former head of the city council raise concerns among activists.

In Kyrgyzstan, the Supreme Court has upheld the decision to cease the operation of trolleybuses in Bishkek. This verdict is the result of ongoing protests from a local initiative group. Bermet Borubaeva, one of the activists, noted that closing the only completely eco-friendly mode of transport exacerbates the already difficult air pollution situation in the capital.

An important aspect of the case is the figure of Kuanychbek Kongantieva, the former chairman of the Bishkek City Council, who signed the document for the liquidation of the trolleybuses. He is currently in the detention center of the State Committee for National Security (GKNB), suspected of land fraud.

The public also expresses serious concerns about the fate of the assets acquired with a loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) amounting to $23.5 million. Activists believe that the transfer of property was carried out without proper coordination with the lending bank.
