In Kyrgyzstan, there is a serious problem of uneven access to medical care caused by a shortage of medical personnel. This was stated at a press conference by Nurgul Ibraeva, head of the Primary Health Care Department of the Ministry of Health.

Ibraeva noted that in large cities, the situation with the provision of specialized specialists is more or less satisfactory; however, in remote areas, it is difficult for citizens to receive the necessary medical assistance.

Janibek Azhibekov, acting director of the Republican Center for Psychiatry and Narcology, added that by the end of 2025, the number of psychiatrists in the country will be only 136 people.

“Fifteen years ago, their number reached 300, and there were 50 narcologists. According to calculations, there should be one psychiatrist for every 40,000 residents. In some areas, where the population is 160,000, there is only one psychiatrist who works part-time, combining duties with a narcologist. He is involved in writing prescriptions, seeing patients, and participating in medical examinations for military enlistment offices. Major psychiatric hospitals are located in Bishkek, Osh, and Jalal-Abad, and there are also two large hospitals in Chym-Korgon and Kyzyl-Jar, but even there, there is a shortage of specialists,” he emphasized.
