Unethical psychologists have become a problem in Kyrgyzstan, as reported by Nurgul Ibraeva, head of the primary health care department of the Ministry of Health, at a recent briefing.

According to her, the level of public awareness about mental health is growing. “If 5-7 years ago, psychologists were mostly approached by children sent by their parents due to speech or mental development issues, now we see that adults have also started seeking help from specialists,” Ibraeva noted. In her opinion, this has led to the emergence of a large number of unethical psychologists who, lacking the appropriate education, begin to offer their services. “We have received complaints from citizens,” she added.

Furthermore, Ibraeva reminded that a law has been adopted in the country that prohibits the advertising of services by psychologists who do not have specialized education. Administrative responsibility is provided for the publication and distribution of such advertisements, as this constitutes a violation of the Law on Advertising.

“Qualified medical psychologists receive more in-depth training and are capable of providing the necessary assistance. Specialists must have a diploma in higher psychological education, valid continuing education certificates, and a license,” emphasized Nurgul Ibraeva.

Additionally, the cost of psychological services was discussed at the briefing. The average price for a 50-minute session ranges from 2000 to 3500 soms. In public medical institutions, such services are provided free of charge under mandatory health insurance.
