According to the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), 26 percent of the population of Kyrgyzstan lives in poverty. This data was presented in the report Kyrgyz Republic Country Brief, March 2026.

The study showed that over 41 percent of citizens do not have the means to provide themselves with adequate nutrition, and 75 percent resort to negative coping strategies, including borrowing money or cutting back on medical expenses.

The most critical situation is observed in the Batken region, where the poverty rate exceeds 40 percent.

The issue of malnutrition remains serious: anemia has been diagnosed in 21 percent of children under five years old.

Despite significant economic growth, food security in the country remains at risk. Key factors contributing to this include dependence on remittances from migrant workers, low levels of self-sufficiency in agriculture, rising prices for food and fuel, and climate-related risks.

The report also notes that 93 percent of Kyrgyzstan's territory is mountainous, making the country vulnerable to natural disasters, including mudflows.
