This historic goal was scored during a home game against the St. Louis Blues. In the 2024/2025 season, Ovechkin surpassed the legendary Canadian Wayne Gretzky, who previously held the record with 894 goals. In the current season, Ovechkin has already scored three goals and provided five assists. It is also worth noting that this goal was his 977th when considering goals scored in both regular seasons and playoffs. Gretzky remains the leader in this category with 1,016 goals.

Alexander Ovechkin, who is now 40 years old, has been playing for Washington since 2004, having been drafted first overall.

Throughout his career, Ovechkin has been named the most valuable player of the regular season three times, won the title of top scorer nine times, received the Ted Lindsay Award three times, which is awarded based on players' votes, and once won the Art Ross Trophy for being the top scorer. In 2018, he, along with his team, won the Stanley Cup, marking a historic achievement for the club.
