Prose Writer Tugelbay Sydykbekov
Prose writer T. Sydykbekov was born in the village of Ken-Suu in the current Tyup district of the Issyk-Kul region in a peasant family. He learned to read and write at a rural primary school, then studied at the Russian primary school named after A. P. Chekhov in the city of Karakol, graduating in 1927. He studied for one year at the N. K. Krupskaya Secondary School; from 1928 to 1931, he attended the Frunze Agricultural Technical School, and in 1931, he enrolled in the Central Asian Zooveterinary Institute in Ashgabat.
From 1931 to 1936, he worked as head of the department at the editorial office of the newspaper "Leninchil Zhas," and from 1937 to 1947, he served as a literary consultant for the Writers' Union of Kyrgyzstan. From 1949 to 1951, he was the editor of Kyrgyzgosizdat.
He began his creative biography in the 1920s with poetry. His first poetry collection "Kuresh" ("Struggle") was published in 1933. The writer is the author of more than ten poetry collections. T. Sydykbekov is one of the first representatives of Kyrgyz Soviet literature who began to explore the genre of the novel in the 1930s. In the mid-1930s, he conceived a large prose work dedicated to the life of the Kyrgyz village, reflecting the social transformations occurring at that time. In 1937, he published the first book and in 1938, the second book of the novel "Ken-Suu," which realistically depicts the complex phenomena of class struggle at the beginning of the establishment of Soviet power in the Kyrgyz village. In 1939-1940, the writer worked on the novel "Temir," in which he reflected the struggle against the remnants of the defeated beys, manaps, and basmachi during collectivization in the Kyrgyz aiyl.
Along with mastering the realistic novel, the writer created works in other prose genres: a story about Kyrgyz women beet growers "Abysyndar" ("Daughters-in-law"), an essay about conquerors of the ski route Frunze - Moscow "Ala-Too'don altoo" ("Six from Ala-Too"), published in 1938, a poem about border guards— "Tun zharchysynan kabar" ("Night Messenger"), published in 1939, and others.
During the Great Patriotic War, T. Sydykbekov created a series of stories, essays, and journalistic articles dedicated to the courage of Soviet people at the front and in the rear. Subsequently, these served as the basis for the creation of the novel "Bizdin zamandyn kishileri" ("People of Our Time"), which narrates about the people of Soviet Kyrgyzstan, their selfless labor, about international duty and brotherhood of the peoples of our country in the harsh front-line years. This novel was the first in the history of Kyrgyz Soviet literature (in 1949) to be awarded the State Prize of the USSR. It was published in all languages of the fraternal republics of our country, in the languages of all countries of the socialist community.
In the 1950s, he created the novels "Too baldary" ("Children of the Mountains"), "Zayiptar" ("Women"), which occupy a special place in the writer's creative biography. The work on a new edition of the novel "Ken-Suu," published in 1955 under the title "Too arasında" ("Among the Mountains"), was fruitful for the author. Here, the events of the period of collectivization are interpreted from even more mature ideological and artistic positions.
In the 1970s, the writer created the novels "Kurbular" ("Peers"), "Syr achuu" ("Revelation"), the collection of stories and novellas "Kainar bulak" ("Radiant Source"), and others, which illuminate the problems of personality formation, moral integrity of the heroes, and the upbringing of the younger generation.
The novels "Ymanbay peyili" ("Good-natured Ymanbay"), published in 1980, and "Zhol" ("Road"), published in 1982, along with other works created by the writer in the 1980s, testify to the creative activity of the author, who is seeking new forms of artistic embodiment of contemporary phenomena.
T. Sydykbekov made a significant contribution to the study and publication of the epic "Manas." He edited and prepared for publication the third part of the three-volume consolidated version of the epic "Manas" — "Seitek." He was the chief editor of "Essays on the History of Kyrgyz Soviet Literature," published in 1960.
The writer created a number of works in dramaturgy: this includes the epic drama "Manas and Almambet" (1942) (co-authored with K. Rakhmatullin), plays "Mighty Heart," "Dagger," "Masters of the Village," and others.
The writer also works fruitfully in the field of artistic translation. He translated works by A. S. Pushkin, N. A. Nekrasov, D. Bedny, A. P. Chekhov, A. Serafimovich, M. Sholokhov, and others into Kyrgyz.
People's Writer of the Kyrgyz SSR (1968).
Full member of the Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz SSR (1954).
Member of the Union of Soviet Writers since 1936.
Awarded the Order of Lenin, two Orders of the Red Banner of Labor, the Order of Friendship of Peoples, many medals of the USSR, and honorary certificates from the Supreme Soviet of the Kyrgyz SSR.
