Yelnar Berikbayev emphasized that in recent years there has been an increase in attacks on atheists and non-religious people on social media. Insults and accusations of immorality against them go without appropriate response, which, according to him, is a troubling signal for society, reports Ulysmedia.kz.
The expert pointed out that Kazakhstani legislation mainly protects the interests of those who practice religion, neglecting the rights of atheists. All citizens should have equal opportunities and rights before the law.
— I notice that there is increasingly aggressive behavior towards atheists and people without religious beliefs on social media. There is no reaction to insults and accusations of immorality for not believing, — noted Yelnar Berikbayev.
He also provided an example: a lecturer from the Islamic University "Nur-Mubarak" compared atheists to animals and stated that non-believers cannot distinguish between good and evil. This is a direct violation of human dignity.
— When such statements come from people with scientific and religious reputations (in this case, a PhD), the consequences can be particularly dangerous, — warned the religious studies expert.
Berikbayev added that the state must protect the honor and dignity of all citizens, regardless of their religious beliefs. Atheism does not pose a threat to traditions but is one of the forms of worldview. Therefore, it is necessary to adopt a law or amend existing regulations to protect non-religious citizens from insults.
— If we truly want to be a secular state, we must ensure equal rights and protection for all citizens, regardless of their attitude towards religion. A law protecting the feelings of atheists will not be directed against believers or religions, but will be a step towards real equality, respect for human dignity, and reducing conflicts between different worldviews, — concluded Yelnar Berikbayev.
