In the At-Bashinsky district of the Naryn region, where families reside in the summer pastures (жайлоо), there is a tradition of braiding girls' hair into tight braids from an early age and forming "besh kökül" at the temples.

This was shared by local resident Salkyn Turdumambetova.

The term "besh kökül" refers to the process when girls start having five braids braided at their temples from the age of 12.

According to S. Turdumambetova, many locals ascend to the summer pastures of Jol Bogoshtu and Tuyuk Bogoshtu, located near the village of Taldy-Suu, to follow ancient Kyrgyz customs such as "besh kökül".

"Hair is a woman's adornment. It not only adds beauty but also has a deep meaning: 'chach bul senin ырысын' (hair is your happiness). Therefore, it is important for girls to take care of their hair. There is an invisible connection between the condition of the hair and the emotional state of a woman. If she is happy and healthy, her hair will shine," she noted.

Salkyn added that if a woman is experiencing distress or illness, it immediately reflects on her hair — it loses its shine and well-groomed appearance.

Mothers living in the summer pastures take care of their daughters' hair using ayran, which makes the hair softer and gives it shine. When girls reach adolescence, they begin to add herbal infusions to the ayran to enhance hair care.

Additionally, locals adhere to the tradition of "Kelin din chachyn öruu". The day after the wedding ("nike"), the newlywed bride ("kelin") has her hair braided. This mini-ceremony takes place among women chosen by the mother-in-law. The bride is brought out from the "koshogo" (a curtain separating the newlyweds' bed) and seated in the center. The mother-in-law selects those who will braid her hair. During the braiding, those present bless the bride and wish her happiness in family life, hoping that she will become a good "kelin".

Turdumambetova noted that in Naryn, many Kyrgyz traditions have been preserved in their original form ("suu koshulbagan"), without the influence of other cultures.
