Eight years ago, Osh was shaken by a tragic story related to a prolonged family conflict that ended in a horrific crime — a daughter-in-law took the life of her mother-in-law by decapitating her.

After this incident, together with her sister, she attempted to dismember the body; however, they were unable to carry out their plan. To get rid of the evidence, they called a taxi and transported the corpse. Later, a decapitated body was found in one of the trash containers near the Osh Social University (now the Batyraly Sydykov Kyrgyz-Uzbek International University). This shocking news caused a wide resonance and discussion in the media and among the public.

Turmush continues to cover the fates of law enforcement officers in Kyrgyzstan in the run-up to the centenary of the police, which will be celebrated in early November.

Police Lieutenant Colonel and Senior Inspector of the Osh City Police Department's press service, Zamir Sydykov, shared some details of this horrific case.

On August 28, 2017, around 10:00 AM, information was received at the police station from workers of the municipal enterprise "Osh-Tazalyk," who reported a discovery in a trash container in the southeastern part of Osh, near the main building of the Osh Social University. There, a decapitated body was found, showing signs of cuts. The municipal workers presumed it was a woman's body. The first to stumble upon it were Romani women searching for scrap metal. Later, employees of "Tazalyk," who were cleaning the streets of the city, arrived at the scene.

Soon, high-ranking officials from the Osh City Police Department arrived at the crime scene, including Police Colonel Kylych Zholdoshov, as well as an investigative team, prosecutors, and forensic experts. In the trash container, they found the body of a woman wrapped in a sheet and clothing, as well as a "koshogo," which is traditionally used to divide space in homes. According to the experts' conclusions, it was a woman aged 50-55 years, whose arteries had been cut and showed signs of attempts to dismember the body.

The leadership of the Osh City Police Department held an emergency meeting, where it was decided to urgently solve this crime. Several versions were proposed, and investigators began to work through them, paying special attention to identifying the victim.
During operational activities, police officers quickly interrogated numerous witnesses and investigated areas from which the body could have arrived at the container. Due to a lack of surveillance cameras in the city, recordings from the few available were thoroughly checked. Investigators also began to consider the possibility that the victim could be Kyrgyz, as her body was wrapped in a traditional "koshogo." As a result, surveys of residents of nearby villages began.

By the next morning, August 29, 2017, the identity of the victim was established. She was a 51-year-old woman from the Chon-Alai district who was temporarily living on A. Navoi Street in Osh.

On the same day, the daughter-in-law of the murdered woman, a 25-year-old woman, and her 37-year-old older sister were detained on suspicion of murder. In her initial testimony, the suspect claimed that her mother-in-law had gone to visit her younger sister a few days before the events. However, experienced investigators noticed her nervousness and contradictions in her statements, which heightened suspicions. Soon, the 25-year-old woman confessed to committing the crime.

According to her, the conflict with her mother-in-law had been ongoing for a long time and was the reason for the tragedy. On August 26, 2017, after she had seen her husband off to work, her mother-in-law entered her home, expressing dissatisfaction and reproaches. The mother-in-law accused the daughter-in-law of being unworthy of her son and then went to sleep. After that, the 25-year-old woman, under emotional pressure, decided to take revenge. She struck her mother-in-law in the head with a stone several times. After confirming her death, she called her sister.

The sisters attempted to dismember the body, but they were unsuccessful. They wrapped it in a sheet and "koshogo," placed it in a bag, and called a taxi. As a result, they got out near the trash container, and when the bag became too heavy, they asked the taxi driver for help. To hide the evidence, they disposed of the severed head in another container on Y. Gagarin Street. The sisters did everything possible to complicate the identification of the body.

Members of the operational group, volunteers, and relatives searched for the woman's head at the landfill for several days but to no avail.

Zamir Sydykov noted that the investigation of this case was actively participated in by the head of the Osh Police Department, Kylych Zholdoshov, investigator Azamat Sadykov, as well as operational staff such as Zalkarbek Sarykov and Zhodar Ergeshov, and district inspector Ulan Pazylov. Taxi drivers also assisted in the investigation.

Turmush reported that the daughter-in-law of the murdered woman, Umsunay A., born in 1992, and her sister Gulnara, born in 1980, both hail from the village of Daroot-Korgon, Chon-Alai district.

On February 2, 2018, the Osh City Court issued a verdict against the defendants.

- Umsunay, born in 1992, was found guilty of murder with particular cruelty and received 18 years of imprisonment, as well as additional sentences for desecration of a corpse and destruction of property.

The court, considering all the facts, sentenced her to 20 years of imprisonment in a women's penal colony of strict regime and a fine of 100 calculation indicators.

- Gulnara, born in 1980, was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months of imprisonment.

In her final statement at the trial, Umsunay expressed remorse for her actions.

Later, the lawyer for the victim's side filed an appeal in the Osh Regional Court, considering the sentence too lenient.

In April 2018, the judicial panel increased the sentences: Umsunay received 24 years and 6 months, while Gulnara received 5 years.

Thus, the Osh Regional Court sentenced the daughter-in-law to 24 years in prison and her older sister to 5 years.
