In the 1990s, Bergmaier worked as an investment banker in New York before shifting to private investments. He was the majority shareholder of MindGeek, a Luxembourg-based company that owns websites such as Pornhub, RedTube, and YouPorn. In 2023, MindGeek was sold to a Canadian investment firm.
After the imposition of sanctions against LUKOIL by the U.S. and the U.K. in October, the company announced plans to sell its international assets.
