More than 100 flights have been canceled, and over 300 have been delayed at Indira Gandhi Airport in New Delhi due to smog, reports NDTV.
On its page on the social network X, New Delhi Airport warned passengers about possible disruptions in airline operations due to dense fog. It is recommended to check flight information with airlines.
Air carriers have also urged passengers to plan their trips to the airport in advance, as road traffic may be delayed due to smog.
Additionally, poor visibility has led to delays of over 90 trains, both arriving and departing from Delhi, by six to seven hours.
On the morning of December 15, the air quality index (AQI) in the Indian capital reached 456, which is the second worst reading for the current season. AQI levels above 401 are considered hazardous, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board of India.
In response to the sharp deterioration in air quality, local authorities imposed a ban on all construction and demolition work in Delhi and its surroundings on December 13. Furthermore, 50% of employees in public and private institutions have been transitioned to remote work, and classes in schools are to be conducted in a hybrid format, combining in-person and distance learning.
