The withdrawal of Russian troops and weapons began last week, as reported by Reuters, citing its sources. It is expected that some of them will be moved to the Russian airbase in Khmeimim in western Syria, while others will return to Russia.
According to a source in the Syrian security service, military equipment and heavy weapons were sent from Kamyshly to Khmeimim over the past two days.
On January 26, a Reuters journalist noted that Russian flags were still flying at Kamyshly airport, and two planes with Russian identification marks were on the runway.
The publication "Al-Monitor" also released a video, allegedly filmed on the territory of the Russian base in Kamyshly. In this video, abandoned items and Russian flags can be seen fluttering above the communication tower.
Kamyshly is one of three bases that Russia has in Syria. Russian troops were deployed here in 2019 and remained after the change of power in Syria. In the summer of 2025, their numbers even increased.
According to data from "Kommersant," published on January 21, Syrian authorities, as reported by a source, decided that after the expulsion of the Kurds from this territory, they would ask Russian troops to leave the airport, as "there is no longer any sense in staying there."
