Mongolia and Italy established diplomatic relations in 1970. In 2011, the Embassy of Mongolia opened in Rome, and in 2016, Italy opened its embassy in Ulaanbaatar.
Diplomatic relations between Italy and Mongolia were established in 1970, and in 2025, the 55th anniversary of these relations will be celebrated. However, cultural and trade exchanges between the two peoples began long before this event. The National Museum of Genghis Khan in Ulaanbaatar houses a Roman relic dating back to the 3rd–2nd centuries BC, which attests to ancient contacts. The first diplomatic mission from Pope Innocent IV was sent in 1245, when the pope was concerned about the expansion of the Mongol Empire and sent Franciscan Giovanni da Pian del Carpine to Khan Guyuk with two papal letters. This occurred long before Marco Polo's famous journey to the Great Khan Kublai. In 2024, an exhibition dedicated to Marco Polo was organized in cooperation with the Genghis Khan Museum, timed to the 700th anniversary of his death. A statue of this outstanding Venetian has been erected in Ulaanbaatar.
Relations between Mongolia and Italy are strengthened by numerous agreements and documents. The most important of them can be found at the following link. In January 2025, an agreement on air communication was signed, which creates a legal basis for organizing direct flights between the two countries.
Cooperation is also carried out within the framework of the Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between Mongolia and the European Union and its member states.
