Kyrgyzstan — Uzbekistan

Diplomatic relations between the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uzbekistan were established on February 16, 1993. Over the years of independence, the Kyrgyz Republic and the Republic of Uzbekistan have created a solid legal framework for the development and strengthening of bilateral cooperation. More than 80 international treaties are in effect, covering almost all areas of bilateral cooperation. The basic document regulating relations between the two states is the Treaty of Eternal Friendship between the two countries, signed on December 24, 1996.

Overall, the relations between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have been characterized by neighborly and mutually beneficial cooperation, developing step by step across the entire spectrum of bilateral interaction. Cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan within multilateral institutions has been most effective in the CIS and SCO. Within the CIS, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan have always particularly emphasized issues of free trade, economic integration, and cooperation.

In Kyrgyzstan's trade with foreign countries, Uzbekistan ranks fifth. The share of Uzbekistan in Kyrgyzstan's total trade turnover is 4.0%. The foreign trade turnover of the Kyrgyz Republic with the Republic of Uzbekistan in 2004 amounted to 66.6 million dollars, which is an increase of 20.0% compared to 2003; exports amounted to 14.7 million dollars (a decrease of 9.8%), and imports amounted to 51.9 million dollars (an increase of 32.4%). The trade balance showed a negative balance of 37.2 million dollars in favor of the Republic of Uzbekistan.

Kyrgyzstan — Tajikistan

Cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan has become an example of fruitful collaboration in economic and political fields, in education, and in the development of various humanitarian ties. Over the years of cooperation, 60 documents have been signed, including 11 intergovernmental, 23 inter-agency, and 26 interdepartmental agreements. A large number of joint mutually beneficial and important projects and initiatives have also been adopted, particularly in the areas of communications, energy, regional security, and sustainable development of mountainous regions. Kyrgyz-Tajik cooperation has strategic significance for conducting a coordinated policy in the use of water resources in the region.
