Trump noted that during their meeting, issues of trade and the resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine were also discussed. He stated that Modi agreed to stop purchasing oil from Russia and to increase imports from the U.S., as well as possibly from Venezuela, which, according to him, would contribute to ending the war in Ukraine, as he indicated in his post on Truth Social.
Additionally, Trump announced a new trade agreement between the two countries that takes effect immediately. Under this agreement, the U.S. will reduce tariffs for India from 25% to 18%, while India has committed to reducing its tariffs and non-tariff barriers on American goods to zero.
As part of the agreements reached, India also agreed to purchase American goods in the energy, coal, and agriculture sectors worth over $500 billion.
Trump expressed confidence that relations between the U.S. and India will only strengthen, adding that "Prime Minister Modi and I are two people who really work, unlike most."
Prime Minister Modi, in turn, noted in his post on social media platform X that he is grateful to Trump for the tariff reductions, although he did not mention the cessation of Russian oil purchases.
According to Reuters, this agreement was reached after several months of tense trade discussions.
In August 2025, Trump imposed additional tariffs on Indian goods, explaining that India continued to purchase oil from Russia. At the beginning of 2026, he threatened to raise tariffs if India did not stop its purchases.
Amid these negotiations, Indian companies alternately suspended and resumed purchases of Russian oil, which was also related to U.S. sanctions against companies "Lukoil" and "Rosneft."
