
On October 27, 2014, the President of the Kyrgyz Republic, Almazbek Atambaev, met with the renowned journalist and political commentator Syrgak Abdyldaev and awarded him a state honor – the "Erdik" medal for his courage shown during the performance of his professional duties, his active civic stance in defending human rights, and exposing corrupt and criminal schemes during the regime of Kurmanbek Bakiyev.
The corresponding decree on the awarding of journalist Syrgak Abdyldaev was signed by President Almazbek Atambaev.
During the meeting, the Head of State expressed gratitude to Syrgak Abdyldaev for his resilience and courage demonstrated in his journalistic activities.
President Almazbek Atambaev and journalist Syrgak Abdyldaev discussed issues related to the development of the socio-political situation in the country, the fight against corruption, as well as the progress of reforms in various sectors.
The Head of State emphasized the special role of the media in the democratic development of the country, noting that the state will continue to create all conditions for the development of freedom of speech and journalism in Kyrgyzstan. “The courage of a journalist is manifested in his struggle for truth, justice, and freedom of speech. His work should always be in the interests of the country,” said Almazbek Atambaev.

In 2009, after the publication of a series of articles by Syrgak Abdyldaev criticizing the regime of Kurmanbek Bakiyev, an assassination attempt was organized against him, resulting in 29 stab wounds, multiple bruises, and fractures of his legs and arms. After the assassination attempt, Syrgak Abdyldaev was forced to seek political asylum in Sweden, where he is currently undergoing treatment and residing.
